The long history of Malaga has been traced by various different civilisations that took the city over. 3.000 years ago the Phoenicians landed in Málaga, they called it Malaca and built a settlement near the hill on which the Alcazaba castle stands today. Than the city was colonised by Romans, who enlarged the fortress and built the theatre, that nowadays is open to the public. In this time Malaga obtained the benefits of being declared a confederated city of Rome.
The great period of prosperity last also during the regin of Moors. In this time Málaga was a major Moorish city and port till 1487 when Málaga was re-conquered by the Catholic Monarchs. Than some prosperity arrived in the 19th century when high-class bourgeoisie had been formed and founded varied industries. The influence n Malaga`s economy was divided mainly between two families: the Larios and the Heredia, thanks to whom Malaga became the second most significant industrial centre in Spain.
During the Civil War Malaga used to be a Republican citadel till being bombed by Italians and fell in February 1937.
Now, thanks to the development of turism in the region of Costa del Sol, Malaga continue to grow and becomes one of the most popular cities in Spain famous for Spanish Language Schools for foreigners.
