City of SAN SEBASTIÁN
San Sebastian, also called Donostia, lies on the North coast of Spain just 21 km from the border with France, on a beautiful sandy Bay of Biscay surrounded by the low green hills of Guipuzcoa. The number of 170.000 of inhabitants redoubles during the summer months as the Spaniards head North coast to avoid the inland heat.
San Sebastian is mostly famous for one of the most beautiful city beaches in Europe – La Concha. From there you you can reach Santa Clara Island with lovely lighthouse and a small wharf - a great place for a pikcnic. Beside La Concha there are two more beaches: the laid-back Ondaretta and dominated by amateurs of surfing Playa de Zurriola.
The city itself is stunningly beautiful. The most important monuments and places of interest are concentrated in old part of the city. The 18th century basilica of Santa María, gothic church San Vincente, Plaza de la Constitucion - the antique bullring and Museo de San Telmo are absolutely must on your trip plan. In the evening Parte Vieja change the face and becomes the nighlight center. Crowds gather at narrow and noisy streets of fascinating old quarter to lounge from one bar to another.
The old quarter opens out to the sea at the harbour, home to the fishing fleet where most of the traditional local life takes place. In a neighbourhood of the marina you can buy tasty prepared seafood or watch women fixing fishing nets in a tradicional way.
After exhausting discovering of the gem of North Spain don`t forget to drop into one of the siderías to try a tradicional basque cider in a area of Astigarraga, about 6 kilometers outside the city centre.
San Sebastian is also a festival city. Anormous amount of great cultural and sport events like Jazz Festival, Semana Grande, International Film Festival, rowing competitions through all the year make Danostia very entertaining.
