 WHAT TO SEE IN SEVILLE?

Seville is a city steeped in the past with plenty of places that proof an intricate history of this region. In fact even lazy lounge throughout Seville`s streets can be opportunity to discover some concussing heirloom of past civilizations.

The old town, with concentation of monuments and places worth to see, is located on the left riverside of the Guadalquivir. The mingle of Moorish, Jewish and Christian influences can be seen almost everywhere. The best example of concomitance of different cultures is Seville`s gothic Cathedral originally built as a mosque by the Almohads in the late 12th century contains famous quondam moorish minaret Giralda and even older Vizghot`s baptismal font. Now Seville`s Cathedral is the third largest gothic church in the world.

Facing the Cathedral Alcazar Palace is an antique abode of Seville`s lords. Under the reign of cruel Al- Mutadid Alcazar was enlarged to admit his harem containing 800 women. During the next centuries the palace was enlarged to come up to expectations of following sovereigns. In the past Alcazar was one of the most important point of defence in Seville and was so big that spread to Golden Tower, another Moorish treasure. The mudajar style of architecture can be admire also in Casa de Pilatos.

Seville is the city where the tradition of corrida was started in 18th century. The bullring Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza is the oldest, most impressive and for sure most significant in Spain.

East of the Cathedral and Alcazar is Seville`s medieval Jewish quarter Barrio Santa Cruz made up of rambling narrow lanes, quaint plant-decked plazas and romantic cafes. Lovely whitewashed residences with wrought iron balustrades of balconies and entrance gates with filled with plants patios gives a shalter during the hot andalusian days.

In the parched by the blistering sun Sevilla there is a palce where you can have a sigh of relief. The semicircular Plaza de Espana, build in 1929 as the Ibero-American Expo center and nearby Parque de Maria Luisa, successful combination of art deco and mudejar style are perfect places to rest during siesta.

The Archivo de Indias is another interesting destination where you can hide fron the burning sun. Thousands of pages of documents, including manuscripts of Colimbus, Cervantes and Cortes and antique maps compose the picture the potency of Spain`s American empire in the past centuries.

The great contribution in Spain`s artistic golden age is shown in the Museo de Bellas Artes with works of El Greco, Ribera and Millan.
