Vejer de la Frontera, like most of the medieval settlements, used to be a fortified and highly defendable town in case of assault. To our times the city walls have endured almost entirely intact, and you can climb up on to them at various points. Six original Arches, the gates that guarded the way to the centre, still form a prominent feature of the everyday life of Vejer.
The greatest pleasure in Vejer is simply strolling through narrow, cobbled streets and discovering the beautiful patios and balconies of the whitewashed houses and other points of historical interest. Sooner or later you reach the most popular meeting point in Vejer: Plaza de Espana. The circular square surrounded by lots of date palms and bouganvillas attracts both locals and turists. The centrally situated fountain, covered with brightly coloured, glazed tiles with water spouting through the mounths of four frogs, arouses interest and gives a sensation of coolness during the hot days of summer. To enjoy a beautiful view of the Plaza you can climb to the corner tower of Casa de Mayorazgo.
At the highest point of the town you can admire well-preserved examples of tradicional rural construction- the windmills of San Miguel.
The unruffled, romantic atmosphere of Moorish Vejer de la Frontera combined with the Andalusian temperament of the people make this town unusual and a place worth seeing.
